Scam Alert: Jobsite Resume Postings Targeted
The Better Business Bureau has been made aware of a scam concerning
resumes placed on one of the well known jobsites. Pursuant to the
posting, one such applicant was contacted through email by a man
stating that he was associated with a company in London offering
lucrative employment and requesting completion of an employment
application he would forward. Within minutes the application was
received, filled out and returned. The next morning the applicant
received an envelope via Fed Ex with 5 money orders totally nearly
$5000.00. She was told to place the money in her bank account and then
in a few days she was to withdraw most of it and obtain a money gram
then forward it to a man in Australia.

Estate Fraud
Sometimes the victim is a retired senior strong-armed into signing some
papers under the misconception that they are being granted a reverse
mortgage. Another target is a desperate homeowner who can't make his
monthly adjustable rate mortgage payment so he transfers his deed to
obtain some financial relief. Other times it's a family that has
suffered huge medical expenses, is facing foreclosure and succumbs to a
stranger's offer to "buy" their property. The Better Business Bureau
system has issued an alert to help combat the growing incidences of
real estate fraud.

Data Security Problems in Business
The Council of Better Business Bureaus and Privacy and American
Business recently unveiled a new national education initiative geared
toward helping small business owners improve their security and privacy
readiness in a climate of data exposure risks. "Small businesses aren't
quite in step with their larger industry counterparts in addressing
data security," said Steve Cole, President and CEO of the Council of
Better Business Bureaus. "They often believe they are better protected
than they really are because they don't have in house experts to advise
them on what else they should be doing beyond locking up their
storefronts. It's difficult for them to know where and how to access
support. This makes us all vulnerable, as small businesses are a strong
part of our economy. Business owners of all sizes need to be vigilant
in protecting their customers, their employees and themselves."
