Scam Alerts: Fraud is a Growth Industry
Just when you thought you had heard everything along comes yet another scam that is a creative twist on an old theme…parting you with your money. The email below was forwarded to us last week. Rather then trying to locate a missing heir or transfer funds of a Nigerian royal, this scam appeals to the patriots among us. The outlandish nature and awkward wording should be enough of a deterrent but we are, nonetheless, being asked if it is legitimate! The email scam we received is as follows:

With the start of the New Year it's the time to make resolutions for doing business better. The Better Business Bureau urges you to partner with us so we may help you be a better business in 2006. We are in a unique position to comment on our observations from the consumer perspective as witnessed by the thousands of people we counsel on the telephone and receive complaints from.

Consumer Education Test
1. If you receive a sweater for Christmas you can return it for a refund as long as you have a receipt.
False. Return policies vary by store, plus clearance merchandise may not have return privileges.

2. Stores have to issue rain checks if they are out of items which they have advertised.
False. They can choose to issue rain checks or advertise "while quantities of x per store last".

BBB Integrity Awards Ceremony: Reserve the Date
Mark your calendar for the upcoming 2006 Better Business Bureau Integrity Awards Ceremony. The nominations are in and the winners will be announced in conjunction with the BBB Integrity Awards luncheons on April 7, 2006 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Des Moines and on April 21, 2006 at the Holiday Inn in Davenport. In addition to the business awards our students of integrity will be honored and a keynote speaker will be featured.
